No Frills Fridays

Nick Pile ran a fantastic No Frills Summer series with winners announced at last weeks AGM:
A grade - Craig Findlow
B grade - Tim Tyler
C grade - Joel Harbour
Women - Leonie Campbell

Now it is time to think about the Winter No Frills series - it's still a way off but we need some creative minds to come up with some great ideas.

In the past NFF series we have had enduros, time trials, relays, point to point, crits and poker rounds. To keep the races fun and interesting we are looking for any new ideas you have or would like to trial as a race format in the Winter NFF.

Being a race director for the night is easy and fun, you get to choose the track and format and it is a great way to get to know people. Also, the more club members we have running races the more events we can have. Tim Tyler is coordinating the Winter NFF series so contact him (or email us and we'll pass it on) with your suggestions.

Remember the focus of NFF is fun racing and it's a great introduction to MTB racing & Race directing. Get your ideas flowing!

Mountains to the Beach (from Martin Keir)

Whilst lots of the GMBC crew were riding in the Otway Oddysey and Mt Beauty enduro, Dave and I had a week off work and headed to Australia's highest mountain for a five day stage race - 'Mountains to the Beach' run by Wild Horizons. It starts at the Eagles Nest Chair at Thredbo (1900m) and finishes at Narooma on the South coast of NSW. Photo left shows Dave & I at the start (Dave's got his race face on!)

The race is a combination of stage racing and transition stages and to gain a result riders must complete every stage. It included rocky downhills, beautiful single track, very steep and LONG climbs, beach riding and even a couple of neck deep water crossings that proved to be 'interesting' for short a---s like Dave & I. Stage racing was a new experience for us and proved to be a wonderful challenge - we did complete the 358km and recorded a result! The highlight of the race was the amazing scenery and also racing with like-minded MTB riders for 5 days - catching up with all the stories over dinner, breakfast & lunches! Photo on right shows us with another pairs team - showing off the GMBC club kit!

Tania's thoughts

GMBC members have been busy over the last couple of weeks.

Sunday Feb 14th saw around 230 competitors 'lapping up' the Kurrajong at the GMBC Crazy 6 State Series Enduro. This was the first event in the 2010 State Enduro Series and competition was fierce. Phil Orr amazed us all by totting up 14 laps (that's over 150km) in 6 hours as a Solo! Only the Male Pairs winners (Total Rush Pink) managed to do better, squeezing in one extra lap. As the First Aider for the event I'm happy to report minimal damage to bodies, although we did have a couple of riders who tussled with trees and their collarbones came off second best.

Early morning, Saturday 20th Feb saw many GMBC members starting off from Apollo Bay or Forrest in the Otway Odyssey. The day was hot and the course was tough. In the 100km Dave Rusden came in 6th in the Vets, with Dave Scarlett and new member Lee Floyd also doing well, completing the course in less than 6.5hrs.

In the 50km Brett Elderfield was 7th in the open category and Riley Flaherty came in a very creditable 6th in the Juniors (pretty good for a 14yr old in an U18 category!) There were lots of other GMBC members in the race and I was there too; Lisa Page and I completed the 50km - and I'm not saying how long it took, just suffice to say it was a long day. The photo shows us at the start - I'm not publishing the finish photo!

Well done to everyone who competed.

State Series XC race

GMBC members had some great results at the State Series XC race at Bendigo on Feb 7th.

The race was held at the Heritage Rd track; hilly & rocky course combined with a hot day made it hard on bikes and bodies. There were a lot of DNFs with punctures galore!

Eight GMBC members raced in various divisions and 4 gained podium positions: Dave Rusden - 2nd in Masters (see photo of Dave looking really happy!), Mark Grundy - 2nd in SuperMasters, Ryan Lloyd - 2nd in U17s and new member Alistair Crameri - 3rd in U19s. Well done everyone who raced - it was tough!

VES T-shirts available now!

VES 2010 t-shirts are a great memento of the State Enduro Series. Check out the great design below!
PS - if you missed out on the day they will be available at the other State Enduro races

Martin's thoughts

Hi there Folks,

Here is a quick update about what is happening at GMBC at present.

The Tuesday night social ride had 6 riders turn up this week. Dave Rusden has been organising these rides and looked mighty dapper kitted out in his new GMBC club kit (we still have a few items of the blue club kit left and also some of the limited edition red kit for sale). We met at Sandy Creek corner and rode from the Kurrajong over to Stockyards and back, totalling 41kms. It was an enjoyable ride and Dave & Craig taught a few of us the technique of mono hops. Also one of the park Koalas blocked the track on the way back! So if you're free on a Tuesday night get down to the Sandy Creek carpark by 6pm.

Also the GMBC Crazy 6 Enduro is coming up (see above).
We would love to see as many GMBC teams in the Vic Enduro Series as possible and GMBC is running the first event for the year, so if you are looking for a team email the club or speak up at the NFF series and we'll try to get a list together. Don't let not having a team stop you from competing in this really fun series.

The No Frills Fridays night series is in full swing and we have had 80 different riders turn up to race so far. It has been great to see Nick Pile getting out and running his first series so well. Thanks Nick! Let Nick or the club know if you would like to be a race director in the future. Race directing is fun and you get full points for being a race director which goes towards the club championship results. Those points could be very valuable at the end of the season when all the points are tallied!

See you at the next event,
Martin

What's on? - There's lots on!

OK, you've had your Christmas pud and your New Year cheer - time to get back on the bike! (or well done to those who kept up the training over the silly season).

  • Next Friday Jan 15th NFF races will start again - get yourself out to Sandy Creek carpark to register - 6pm onwards. Racing at 7pm. Lots of fun and not too serious, but remember the more events you do the better your handicap will be for the last event and the more points you score for the Club Championship.
  • Social rides are still happening on Tuesday evenings - leaving at 6.15pm from Sandy Creek carpark.
  • Start planning for the Crazy Six Enduro Feb 14th at the You Yangs. This will be the first event in the 2010 Enduro State Series. Get a team together or go the solo - it's bound to be a hoot!

Fixie Fridays

After enduring the winter months, Fixie Fridays is still going strong. Well past our six month trial period and looking at keping it as simple as possible. We roll arond the streets of Geelong through the Botanical Gardens and the Waterfront, past historic landmarks and sampling the caffeine delights of our city. Finishing off with some breakfast at a cafe somewhere and in the meantime talk a heap of rubbish roughly pertaining to pushbikes.

Starts at the regular time of seven in the morning at the shop. We don't ride that far, but we drink a lot of coffee. It's free except for the rear wheels. Hope to see you there.

No Frills Summer Series and Tuesday Social Rides

The No Frills Summer Series is off and running. Action is fast and furious. If you haven't yet been down to grab some race points, now is your chance. A friendly atmosphere and a great way to finish off the working week. 1800 rego opens, 1900 race starts.

The GMBC Tuesday's Social Rides are on, held by David Rusden. Bring your friends along to see the other side of the club, they're there for all to join in. Depart Sandy Ck Cpk at 1815 every Tuesday.

Gravity 12 hour and Officer 6 hour

Ryan Lloyd - Before he got hot and dirty

Last weekend was a grueling Gravity 12 Hour up near Bright. Steve Clausen, Jodie Clausen and David Morgan teamed up as "3rd wheel" and came 7th in Mixed Threes. Clan Lloyd (Stuart and Ryan) joined Nathan Curtis and Chad Sully as "GMBC Racing" finishing 6th in Mens Fours. David Rusden and Neil Robinson as "Baum Supremacy" did not quite fulfill the promise of their name coming 4th in Mens Pairs. Ryan Moody made an attempt at solo, finishing 9 laps in 6 hours before the heat got the better of him.

Running Start

It was a tough race with heat and dehydration taking their toll on the riders.

Next Sunday the GMBC tent will make its way to the Officer 6 hour run by the Fat Tyre Fliers. So far Steve Clausen and Darren Baum are entered as a pair and David Rusden is riding solo. Other members are welcome to join us in the club tent - send us an email if you are coming so we know how many tents to bring.
